Product Management Lessons from Diwali: Nostalgia, Innovation, and the Pursuit of Joy 🪔
Diwali has always been my favorite time of year. As a kid, it was about gathering with family, bursting fireworks, and of course, indulging in sweets. Now, as a Product Manager for the past eight years, Diwali means something even deeper. It’s not just a festival; it’s a reminder of the joy in creating something meaningful, whether that’s through bringing family together or building products that genuinely improve lives.
Product management and Diwali have more in common than you might think — both are about planning meticulously, delighting people, and adapting to new trends while honoring the past. Here are a few nostalgic (and practical!) lessons Diwali has taught me that I carry into my work:
1. The Power of Planning: A Tradition Passed Down 📝🪔
I remember Diwali preparations at home — the cleaning, shopping, planning for guests. My parents would leave no stone unturned to make sure everything was perfect, right down to the smallest details. Product management requires the same level of preparation and precision.
Whether it’s creating a roadmap or defining features, success lies in those early stages. A well-structured roadmap or product launch plan, like Diwali prep, ensures everything comes together for a joyful (or smooth!) experience.
Lesson Learned: Be thorough in planning. Bring the team together early, outline dependencies, and prepare for every possible outcome. Just like a Diwali celebration, preparation is everything. ✨
2. Delighting Users: A Festival of Happiness 🪔🎉
Growing up, I saw how much thought went into making Diwali joyful for everyone — from the homemade sweets that my mom would make to the little gifts exchanged with neighbours. Just as my family tried to create happiness for our guests, product managers aim to create features that genuinely delight users.
A product only resonates when it meets a need or brings some happiness. Whether it’s a small UI improvement or a game-changing feature, if it makes a user’s life easier or more enjoyable, that’s a win.
Lesson Learned: Think about what will genuinely add joy or value to your users’ lives. Much like my mom’s Diwali treats, it’s the thoughtful touches that often make the biggest difference. 🌼
3. Innovation and Iteration: Embracing Change 🌱🎆
Over the years, Diwali has changed. Today, it’s more eco-friendly, with less emphasis on fireworks and more on community and togetherness. This evolution reminds me of how products must also adapt with time, user needs, and trends.
Just as our Diwali celebrations now include new elements, a product manager must constantly evaluate and iterate. It’s all about adjusting to user feedback and evolving the product to stay relevant and impactful.
Lesson Learned: Never stop evolving. Just as Diwali today isn’t exactly what it was ten years ago, products need to evolve to meet current needs. Keep listening, keep innovating, and don’t be afraid to update the roadmap. 🎇
4. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Like Family Working Together 🤝🎉
For Diwali, everyone in the family has a role. I remember how my father, who is no longer with us, used to handle all the logistics while my mother would make her signature sweets. Each person contributed in their own way, creating a celebration filled with warmth and unity.
In product management, I strive to capture that same spirit of teamwork. Successful products are born from cross-functional collaboration, bringing together engineering, design, marketing, and sales.
Lesson Learned: Build camaraderie within your team. Open communication, mutual respect, and celebrating each milestone together can create something truly meaningful — just like a family Diwali celebration. 🌟
5. Launch Day: The Diwali of Product Management 🚀🪔
For my family, the main day of Diwali was the ultimate payoff — a day when everything came together, and we’d bask in the joy of celebration after weeks of hard work. For a product manager, launch day holds the same significance. After all the effort, testing, and coordination, it’s when you finally bring something valuable to users.
Lesson Learned: Treat every launch like Diwali. Be proud, prepare for surprises, and take the time to celebrate your team’s hard work. Every launch is a milestone, just like every Diwali brings new memories. 🪔🌠
A Festival of Reflection and Renewal
Diwali isn’t just about celebration — it’s also a time to pause, reflect, and think about what we’ve achieved and what lies ahead. It’s a perfect parallel to the product cycle. As product managers, we, too, reflect after each project, recognizing successes and identifying areas for improvement. Every launch, like every Diwali, is an opportunity to learn, celebrate, and make something even better next time.
So this Diwali, as I hang up the lights and savor the sweets, I’m grateful not only for the festival itself but for the lessons it brings to my work as a product manager. Here’s to illuminating our products and lives with the spirit of Diwali — one that blends tradition with innovation, community with collaboration, and success with joy.
Wishing everyone a joyous, vibrant, and reflective Happy Diwali 🪔 !! May this festival spark joy, innovation, and inspiration in every corner of your life and career. 🪔 🪔🪔🪔🪔🪔🪔🪔🪔
